Three Women Infected With HIV Through ‘Vampire Facials’

Three women who underwent "vampire facials" at a New Mexico spa have reportedly contracted HIV. This is the first case of HIV to come from cosmetic injections, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).  The vampire facial technique became popular after Kim Kardashian underwent the procedure. The cosmetic treatment involves extracting a small amount of blood and separating the platelet-rich plasma before application.  The CDC found evidence of contamination at the unlicensed facility where the procedures were done, leading to HIV transmissions. "Evidence suggests that contamination from an undetermined source at the spa during spring and summer 2018 resulted in HIV-1 transmission to these three patients," explained the CDC in a statement.  The spa owner was sentenced to over three years in prison for negligence.
